George Gracey

George Edwin Gracey of Listowel passed away on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, in his 85th year.

Husband of Sandra (O’Neil) Gracey.  Father of Ella & Matt Harney of Wellesley, Steven & Wendy Gracey of Oakville, Chris & Lisa Gracey of Rosemont, Marie & Scott Gibbs of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Susanne & Tim Monk of Wellesley.  Also survived by 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.  Brother of Evelyn O’Leary of Woodstock, Charlie & Donna Gracey of Ancaster, David & Coline Gracey of Scarborough, and Don & Nancy Gracey of Toronto.  Predeceased by his son Scott Gracey, sisters Imogene Apps, and Helen Williams, and brother Cecil Gracey.

George was a long-time head of the Science Department at Listowel District Secondary School and was the wrestling coach.  While teaching, George also farmed, volunteered tirelessly, inspired others, and accomplished many things.

In 2001, he was recognized for 20 years of Service to Scouting.  George received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002 and 2003, in recognition of significant achievement and distinguished service to his country, community, and fellow Canadians. George was named Listowel’s Citizen of the Year in 2003 for his contributions to the local community. 

In December 16, 2008, George was recognized for giving 105 volunteer hours to Habitat for Humanity between April and November of 2008, and for giving his time, energy, and skill to help create a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.  In 2010, he was inducted into the Gryphon Hall of Fame as a member of the 1958 University of Guelph Soccer team.

George volunteered for and supported the Middle Maitland Rejuvenation Committee, Listowel Agricultural Society, Trinity United Church, Listowel, and co-founded the Listowel Concert Singers.  He drove for the VON, and assisted in the settlement of Kosovo refugees in Listowel.  He volunteered for 20 years with Habitat for Humanity, doing deconstruction and construction, and helping set up the local Restore.  And, he found time to take over 20 Mission trips to Central America to build schools, medical clinics, and homes.

Visitation was held at Trinity United Church, Listowel on Saturday, October 30, 2021 from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m.  A private family funeral service followed at 2:00 p.m.  The service was live-streamed, and the link available on the funeral home website.  Interment in Fairview Cemetery, Listowel.

Memorial donations to Trinity United Church, Habitat For Humanity, or the Salvation Army would be appreciated, and may be made through the Eaton Funeral Home, Listowel.
