Ian Munro passed away at Brucelea Haven in Walkerton on December 30th, 2022, in his 67th year after a lengthy battle with kidney disease and cancer.
Ian is predeceased by his parents, Jim and Anna Munro. He is survived by his sister Peggy (Gary) Munro of Walkerton, nephew David (Jessica) Munro and great nephews Alex and Aiden and great niece
Mckenzie of Cary, North Carolina, niece Heather Munro of Walkerton and long-time family friends John MacDonald, Carol Patterson and Maurice Voisin.
Ian was adopted into the Munro family at the age of four months in Halifax, Nova Scotia. By the age of two, Ian with his ready smile and auburn ringlets began his long journey in the health care system and his daily doses of medication. For those that experienced Ian’s non-stop talking, you would be shocked to know that he didn’t talk till he was over five years old, and after years of speech therapy. Schooling was a struggle, but his wonderful boys soprano voice was memorable.
Ian’s first experience with H.A.R.C. and Community Living happened when Ian was seventeen years old. He retired from H.A.R.C. in Hanover in 2007 due to increasing health challenges.
Throughout Ian’s whole life he always had dreams and goals that were important to him. He would plan how to succeed by stealth, relying on his brother-in-law to back him up, or just plain charm. Sometimes there was success, mostly not. However, Ian was determined and would continue his dreams and goals, especially to live a long life.
If you walked into Ian’s room you knew immediately his three favourite things in the world, Elvis and more Elvis and then the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Blue Jays. Ian often would watch games with other avid fans at Brucelea who had good treats that nurses on the third floor would not see him consume, or so he thought.
Ian entertained the staff at the Hanover Hospital for fifteen years on his way to dialysis. He referred to Brucelea Haven as home. Nancy Sweiger was a strong advocate for Ian, in his sister’s absence, and the nurses and personal support staff are all blessings in his care and keeping him alive, against all odds. Thank you!
Visitation was held at St. Paul’s United Church, Walkerton, on Tuesday, January 3rd, 2023, from 10-10:45 am, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am. Rev. Cathy Paul officiated. Interment to be held at a later date at Hanover Cemetery.
