John (Jack) Robert Frederick Stewart of Mildmay, Ontario passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 18, 2022, hours shy of his 87th birthday.
Jack is survived by Gladys (née Sherwood), his bride of 62 years; daughter Leslie Stewart Rose and her husband Sheldon Rose, and granddaughter Sydney Stewart Rose. He is predeceased by his brother Donald James Stewart, father Ossie Waldo Stewart, and mother Joan Sinclair (née McCormick) Stewart.
Jack was born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario. Following his father’s footsteps, he studied Pharmacy at the University of Toronto. Graduating in 1959, he returned home to join his father in their Main Street Hamilton store and dispensary and in 1960 married his high school sweetheart, Glad. In 1974, Jack answered the call from the Village of Mildmay to become their resident pharmacist, a service which he provided faithfully for over 40 years. Jack was dedicated to Mildmay-Carrick serving as president of the Chamber of Commerce, as Chair of 1984 Mildmay-Carrick Homecoming, on Walkerton Hospital Board and giving to a range of fundraisers, events, clubs, and teams over the years. Jack knew the importance of shopping local in a small community and in 2000 built an award-winning building complex south of town to include LCBO and grocery at Stewart’s Town and Country Market. Jack & Glad have confidently passed the torch of care and service to the next generations.
We remember him as a music enthusiast, golfer and sports fan, conservationist, and conversationalist, but it was that smile on his face and twinkle in his eye that reflected his joy of family and friends who enriched his life.
The family is grateful for and wishes to thank the health care team that helped Jack enjoy life on the farm as long as possible, the wonderful staff that cared for us during our brief stay at Chapman House in Owen Sound, and Dr. L. Bowman for her remarkable compassion, care, and wisdom.
A private family service will take place and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
