Doris Evelyn Landon, nee Hammond passed away peacefully June 24, 2022, at Hospice Waterloo Region. Doris was born July 15, 1926, youngest child of William and Minerva (Mitchell) Hammond, in Port Dover. Predeceased by her husband Alex (2014) and brother Douglas (RCAF, 1944). Loving mother of Zeb Landon (Laurie McGregor) of Simcoe, Alexis (Lex) Landon (Reiner Jakubowski) of Waterloo, Beth Lawrence (Donald) of Waterloo, and Charity Landon of Toronto. Cherished grandmother of Alicia Lawrence (Francis Knowles) of Kitchener and Kelly Lawrence (Liam Ryan) of Toronto. Doris is lovingly remembered by her sister Betty Murton, by Alex’s sister Mary Bodnar, and by many nieces, nephews and extended family.
She was a skilled bookkeeper who worked at the Port Dover Dairy and the Town of Simcoe and also managed all the financial aspects of her and Alex’s farming and other endeavours. Later in her career, as Elma Mutual Insurance Company’s first female sales agent, Doris won the trust and respect of her customers by understanding the challenges unique to farmers. In retirement, she enjoyed travelling, taking daily walks, reading and creating original rug-hooking projects. Always gracious and interested in others, Doris was a firm believer in women’s equality, and ready to embrace new ways.
Her family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, July 7, 2022, 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m., at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467. The family requests that all present wear masks. Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will be held at a later date. Those wishing to donate in memory of Doris are asked to consider the Long Point Basin Land Trust or Lutherwood Child and Family Foundation.
