Malcolm McDonald (‘Mac’) Campbell, at the age of 92, passed away on November 19, 2021, survived by his wife Mary, and sons, Donald and Andrew.
Mac came to Walkerton to accept the position of Planning Director for South Bruce County after working as a long term planner in London. He was elected to Walkerton Town Council for six years and served on the planning committee and numerous other committees. Mac was a founding and life member of the Saugeen Field Naturalists and a life member of the Bruce County Historical Society. He also worked as a journalist at the Walkerton Herald Times. He volunteered for many local agencies in various capacities.
Mac loved to hike, on occasion leading nature hikes. He was a bird watcher, identified wild flowers and maintained associated lists. Other interests were cross country skiing, tennis, stamp collecting, crokinole and geography.
One of his enduring achievements was to spearhead the acquisition of a 34 acre parcel of eco-sensitive land in the Port Elgin area and donate it to the Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy, thereby safeguarding it from development.
