The veterans’ banners are in

It was a beautiful sight in the Legion Hall last Sunday – 48 veteran banners on display. Many relatives took the opportunity to have a picture taken with their banner. There were so many banners that there were no more tables left and we had to use the stage. Some very familiar names were present – Cassidy, Dennie, Fullerton, Hewitson, O’Hagan, Schmidt – and those were just the ones with multiple veterans in a family! Watch for the banners to soon be hung on Walkerton’s main street.

Brockton banner co-ordinator Rick Clayfield has already had some additional inquiries for next year, and he’s expecting the project will be expanding into Cargill and Chepstow. It looks like Mildmay will also be getting banners. What a wonderful way to honour our veterans!

At the same time in the Lounge, Joelle Myers kept the Catch the Ace big prize going at least one more week, when her envelope No. 28 was opened to display the 7 of Diamonds. She won the weekly prize of $988, leaving behind a jackpot estimated at close to $21,000 for this Sunday’s draw. There are very few weeks left, but you can still buy your $5 tickets at our vendors, through the Walkerton and District Optimist Club or Walkerton Kinsmen Club, and of course at the Legion. The Legion is open weekdays from 3 to 10 p.m., Saturday from 3 to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. You’re certainly welcome to come root for the winner but you don’t need to be at the Legion on Sunday to win.

On Saturday, almost every seat in the lounge was filled for our meat and turkey draw. Several people won more than once, but the luckiest person has to be member Cheryl Van Oene.  There were only two turkeys left when her number came up as a winner, and then she managed to spin her own number to win the last turkey too! Congratulations Cheryl!

Speaking of winners, member Ruth Brandt was the top pledge fundraiser with $3,200.81 in Run4Health for the mammography machine fundraiser. Walking with her was her son Mark and two grandsons, Alex and Noah. She quipped that Mark was working night shift so he was sleep walking. Was that cheating?
