Temporary traffic lights at ‘S-Bend’ should be installed by spring

Following years of discussion about installing a higher level of traffic safety controls at the intersection of Perth Road 140 and Perth Line 91 (Wellington Roads 8 and 9), Perth and Wellington Counties have arrived at a temporary solution.

WELLINGTON COUNTY – A temporary traffic light system is expected to be operating at the “S-Bend” by the spring.

During its Nov. 10 meeting, Wellington County council approved installation of the lights at the intersection of Wellington Roads 8 and 9 and Perth County Road 140 and Line 91 between Drayton and Palmerston, known locally as the “S-Bend.”

Perth County council approved the project at their Nov. 19 meeting.

The traffic lights are considered an interim safety measure, as Wellington County has budgeted for a roundabout at the intersection in its 10-year plan. Perth County has not approved a roundabout for the intersection at this point.

It is estimated that the lights will cost $120,000 ($60,000 from each county).

Wellington County construction manager Joe de Konging said surveys of the intersections are currently being performed, to be followed by design work.

“I anticipate that the signal works will be completed early spring 2021,” stated de Koning in an email to the Wellington Advertiser.

“A mild winter will enable us to advance that timing.”
