EXETER — After a tough final match against the BCH Ice Stars, the South Huron Sabres Novice C Girls returned home with silver from the OWHA provincials April 8-10.
The Novice C girls started off the competition with a 3-1 win against the Stratford Aces, followed by a 24-0 win against Saugeen Shores.
Chatham gave the Sabres their first loss, 4-0 in the quarter finals.
In the semi finals, the Sabres played against St. Thomas, and won 1-0.
“We came out and played hard. St. Thomas played really good defensively,” said coach Jeremy Geoffrey. The semi-final game went into overtime, and was won for the Sabres with a goal by Bria McCann.
In the finals, the Sabres were up against the BCH Ice Stars, the same team that had beaten them at the recent WOGHL championships.
The Sabres lost 2-0, but did almost manage a goal in the third.
“In the third we scored with about two minutes left in the game, but it was called back. The whistle was blown when it crossed the goal line,” said Geoffrey. “We just couldn’t get anything going.”
