New Millennium Quilters Guild prepares for busy fall season

The New Millennium Quilters Guild (NMQG) is starting to prepare for the 2021-22 season and is very excited about the speaker lineup, upcoming events and workshops.

As COVID restrictions continue, meetings will be held via Zoom until further notice. The guild has seen this as an opportunity to book guest speakers both globally and across the country. Some of these speakers are international educators, quilters with passion and innovation, people who are guaranteed to inspire.

The first meeting for the season will be Tuesday, Sept. 21 with guest speaker Marilyn Farquhar, an international award-winning quilter from Heidelberg, Ont. Farquhar’s quilts are whimsical, thoughtful and unique. She is a true art quilter, and ensures her quilting is integrated into the personality of the quilt. She eagerly departs from traditional techniques, pushing the boundaries of conventional quilting. Her presentation is entitled “Quilts to Challenge and Techniques I’ve Learned.”

Special interest groups – Stashbusters, Historical, and Wool Appliqué – continued to meet virtually throughout the summer and new schedules will soon be organized. This is a great opportunity to learn new skills, quilt along and socialize.

The guild has registered for the Oct. 2 and 3 All Star Virtual Sampler Platter event sponsored by Global Quilting Connection. Eighteen quilt teachers will demonstrate some of their favourite quilting techniques, showcasing a wide variety of styles from traditional to modern and art quilting techniques. Guild members will receive a PDF that includes written instructions to go along with each teacher’s demonstration.

In October, Melissa Marginet will be teaching her Modern Quilting with Your Walking Foot workshop.

In November, members will have an opportunity to sew along via Zoom to make the Glorious and Free wall-hanging. It will be available in three sizes from Quilter on Fire, Brandy Maslowski, the December speaker. This will be a great project for members to use their machine quilting skills learned from previous guild classes, or for those dabbling with ruler work.

Members were given instructions for a summer challenge using seven men’s/women’s shirts to create a quilt.

Instructions for a new Mystery Quilt Challenge called Pieceful Haven will be distributed to members over the next six months. It is a pieced landscape quilt that looks stunning in a variety of fabric choices.

With so many things going on and learning opportunities, this is a fantastic time to become a member of the NMQG. If interested please contact newmillenniumquiltersguild@gmail.com.
