Local couple an inspiration, says Maitland Conservation

WROXETER – St. Augustine Creek couple Jann and Mike Van Massenhoven are inspiring others to plant more trees and shrubs, according to Maitland Conservation (MC).

In a press release dated Nov. 25, MC wants local folks to know that tree and shrub ordering is open for the 2022 season for projects related to conservation.

MC offers a wide selection of native tree and shrub species for projects, such as windbreaks, stream buffers, reforestation, and roadside plantings. Some applications may be eligible for up to 100 per cent cost-share funding.

The Van Massenhovens began transforming their property in 2009 after running into drainage issues and retiring a portion of land next to St. Augustine Creek.

The press release said that the land is now a reforested wetland that helps to filter runoff and prevent soil erosion. Earlier this year, the couple applied for more trees and shrubs to infill and diversify their initial planting and start a healing journey.

“We do respect our land and we want to improve it as much as possible,” Jann said in the release, adding that they aim to support the land and aquatic ecosystems on their property.

The planting now provides a natural corridor for wildlife to “gain access from one property to the next without having to expose themselves out in the open field,” Mike said.

The couple also created a system of trails to enjoy its natural beauty. At the same time, they hike and walk their dogs, hoping to use it for hunting and maple syrup when it’s more established.

Their planting is truly impressive; the release said that while MC offers coordination assistance with a contractor, the Van Massenhovens decided to plant the trees themselves.

The family is continuing with the project of naturalizing their property and helping their family heal from the passing of their son, Kalvin.

Jann explained that being in nature and improving their property is something their son would have supported. After suffering the traumatic loss, she described how the planting project was a way for the family to occupy their hands and minds and immerse themselves in the therapeutic healing of the outdoors together.

“We got our kids involved in it, which is even better… it just gives you that achievement of, ‘Wow, I did this myself,’ especially when they start growing and they get bigger,” Jann said.

The Van Massenhovens have gone above and beyond the required steps, from researching tree species to staking the newly planted trees to monitor their health.

Maintenance is a natural step since they spend much of their time outdoors.

“When we go for walks, if we see a grapevine or something aggressive on the trees, we take it down,” Jann explained.

They even placed duck boxes to add shelter and encourage more biodiversity in their wetland.

If you want to start planting on your property, you can visit the Stewardship Programs tab on the MC website. Then, either fill out a tree and shrub order form to grow yourself or get assistance from MC’s Planting Co-ordination Services.

Contact MC’s forestry technician, Greg Urquhart, for more information or planting project ideas at 519-335-3557 ext. 235 or trees@mvca.on.ca. Orders are open until Jan. 14, 2022.
