Reader disagrees with council’s decision to fly Pride flag

Editor’s note: The following is a letter addressed to the members of North Huron council.

Dear council members of North Huron,

It was very disappointing to read in the May 19 edition of the Wingham Advance Times the story, “Pride flag will fly in North Huron this June.” The township says it will fly the flag to honour the local LGBTQIA community. Never mind that flying the flag dishonours God and our Town of Wingham.

The article further states the Plus Club at F.E. Madill Secondary School sent a letter to North Huron council requesting the flag be raised from June 1-30, and the LGBTIA club would provide the flag.

Is the Township of North Huron council being pressured by a high school club to fly a particular flag? Coun. Chris Palmer was absolutely right to say, “I think it would be despicable to take down our municipal flag in lieu of something else.”

Coun. Paul Heffer is to be commended for voting against the motion. I would ask council to reconsider this request and not fly the Pride flag. Where will this lead to? Do we fly a different flag every month? If so, why not just fly the Canadian flag and be done with it?

There is yet another very important reason that council did not consider when they made their decision: what the Bible teaches, especially in Romans 1 vs 18-32.

We should keep in mind that our country of Canada is founded on the principles that acknowledge the supremacy of God. Therefore, as elected officials to council and all of us should strive to tune our lines to the ruler supreme and not to culture. The culture doesn’t dictate the truth, God’s word dictates truth.

To further clarify, the Bible is a wealth of perfect knowledge and direction for all aspects and walks of life. By flying a Pride flag in Wingham are we not fostering a generation that doesn’t resonate with good principles and void of fundamental values?

It is for these reasons I would plead with council to reconsider and not fly the Pride flag.

Respectfully yours,

Jake Kikkert
