‘Many of our community leaders now operate with tunnel vision’

To the editor,

They say pictures are worth a thousand words, but a picture today of the Howson Dam could conjure up 10,000 words. There were days when our political leaders were inspired and had a true vision for the future of our communities. Unfortunately, many of our community leaders now operate with tunnel vision.

Don’t try water skiing at our park now. What is your vision to enhance our beautiful parkway? Reeve Paul, councillors Chris, Anita, Kevin and Rick – please be honest!

Don’t use the excuse about liability insurance. Not one person in the last 40 years has suffered a severe injury at the Howson Dam. However, you can count on two hands – and most of your toes – the number of injuries that have occurred at the arenas, pool, and ball diamonds. The liability insurance hasn’t been affected. Liability insurance on the dam cannot be a reason to get rid of the dam.

The cost of refurbishing the Howson Dam was going to be shouldered by a local group, with the help of our local Lions Club. This project was turned down by the group of four aforementioned councillors and the reeve. Money was not the reason for the negative response.

Some of our miracle makers said that there would be annual upkeep, costs which the town could not afford. First of all, the Township of North Huron had just over $200,000 to spend on refurbishing the Howson Dam, which was in a holding fund for the past 20 years and not one cent was used to repair the dam. Obviously, the “informed” councillors don’t realize the gigantic costs to maintain the pools, parks, arenas and the fitness center.

I would like to ask the councillors and the reeve to respond publicly for their vision of the future and how does tourism become part of that equation.

I expect that none of our councillors and reeve have the foresight and/or vision to make North Huron a beautiful community.
