Celebrating Walkerton cenotaph’s 100th anniversary

Editor’s note: The following letter to the editor was originally published in the Walkerton Telescope on Aug. 8, 1921. We felt it was only fitting for it to be republished today.

To the town council and citizens of Walkerton who have finished such a token of inestimable value for the parents and the friends of those who left home and position and went or offered to go in the scene of conflict to make secure for time to come the liberty we now enjoy which was threatened by the Central Powers, allow me as one whose son lies in France, whose name appears on the monument unveiled last week as a sign of your great respect for those young men from these parts who will never return, to say your kindness can never, never, never fade away from our appreciation for motive which inspired you who have erected this statue which will stand for time when we who mourn shall be no more and still retain its splendor, transcending its loftiest anticipation.

Sincerely,

H.H. Young
