Huron County man caught with stolen truck in Howick

HOWICK – A Huron County resident remains in custody on four criminal charges following an arrest made by Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) last weekend.

On Friday, July 23 at approximately 5:30 p.m., police received information about a possible stolen vehicle located at a property located on Belmore Line. OPP officers responded to the property and located the accused with a pickup truck stolen from Stratford.

In a press release, police say officers informed the accused he was under arrest and at that point he began to resist the officers and tried to break free. A conducted energy weapon was utilized and the accused was ultimately taken into custody.

Police say further investigation revealed the accused stole gas from a gas station located in Amberley earlier that day. As well, the accused was driving while he was bound by a court ordered driving prohibition.

The accused, 36-year-old Richard Hays from Huron County, has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, theft under $5,000, resist peace officer, and operation while prohibited.

Hays remains in custody with a court appearance scheduled for July 29 in Goderich.
