HOWICK – A Howick Township man remains in custody following an investigation conducted by members of the Huron County OPP.
Police and the Howick Fire Department responded to a fire on Orange Hill Road around 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 13. Emergency personnel say first responders arrived to find a camper trailer fully engulfed in flames.
Members from the Huron County OPP Crime Unit, OPP Forensic Identification Services and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office also attended the scene to assist with the investigation.
Police say that the landowner “became combative and assaultive” when they made contact with him.
The landowner was taken into custody, and according to police a search upon arrest found the man to be in possession of suspected methamphetamine.
The accused, 58-year-old Murray Thornton from Howick, has been charged with arson, possession of a Schedule I substance – methamphetamine, resist arrest and four counts of fail to comply with probation order.
Thornton remains in custody on these charges with a court appearance scheduled for Dec. 17 in Goderich.
