Howick firefighters take part in 9/11 stair climb

Pictured are Howick Fire Department Chief Shawn Edwards and Firefighter Madelyn Yungblut at the 20th Anniversary 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb event hosted by Lambton College. The college runs this event for their students every year, however this year area firefighters were allowed to participate. The event saw students and firefighters walk the equivalent of 110 stories, which was the height of the World Trade Centre buildings. The group traveled up and down the stairs and around the Lambton College arena on Sept. 11. Participants made the trek in full fire combat gear, which weighs roughly 30lbs, while carrying a photo in memory of the 343 fallen firefighters from 9/11. It took the group approximately 2.5 hours to complete, at which point participants rang a bell for each fallen fire fighter. Howick Fire Chief Edwards said it was a very humbling experience as we climbed and reflected on the event 20 years ago. “Remembering not only the fallen, but also the thousands of lives that were saved by their actions that day,” he said.
