Health unit urges caution in the face of rising COVID numbers

GREY-BRUCE – COVID-19 numbers continue to rise in Grey-Bruce.

As of Dec. 20, the local health unit was reporting 25 new cases within the previous 24 hours, bringing the total number of active cases to 192, with 1,363 active high-risk contacts. The latter number is described as “evolving by the hour.” Four people are hospitalized with the virus.

One case of the Omicron variant has been confirmed.

Several schools and a daycare are reported as being in a COVID-19 outbreak: Timothy Christian School, St. Mary’s High School, École St. Dominique Savio, Mildmay Carrick Public School, Happy Hearts daycare, John Diefenbaker Senior School, Grey Highlands Secondary School and Dawnview Public School.

Vaccination clinics continue to be held in Grey-Bruce, with third doses of vaccine recommended for anyone over 18 (three months or 84 days after the second dose). Those receiving a third dose and children aged five-11 require appointments. Appointments must be booked through the provincial system.

Stay safe for the holidays

With the holidays only a few days away, the Grey Bruce Health Unit urges people to do whatever they can to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Perhaps the most important thing people can do is stay home of you have symptoms – even if you’ve been vaccinated and/or the symptoms are mild, are a contact of someone with symptoms, or are directed to isolate by public health.

Consider limiting the number and size of your celebrations, and celebrating only with those within your household.

Stay two metres apart from people you don’t live with.

Wear a face mask correctly – over both nose and mouth – in indoor spaces and outdoors where distancing isn’t possible.

Wash your hands often.

Work from home or remotely as much as possible.

“I thank and commend all who have maintained the diligent effort to contain the spread of this virus,” said Dr. Ian Arra, medical officer of health for Grey-Bruce. “The last present any one of us wants to give our families and friends is a COVID-19 infection; safe holidays is what our families and communities deserve.”
