Goetz hangs on to Mayor position in tight race

TEESWATER – Mayor Mark Goetz defended his position against incumbent Councillor Mike Niesen in the South Bruce municipal election, but with a very tight margin.

The Mildmay-Carrick Ward’s representatives, Ashton Metcalfe and Ron Schnurr were acclaimed earlier this year.

The Teeswater-Culross ward’s representatives will be Tim Borho, who took 854 votes, or 44.8 per cent of the vote, and Julia Gutscher who had 634 (33.2 per cent). Incumbent Mark Ireland was unsuccessful in his bid, earning 420 votes (22 per cent). Twelve voters abstained in this ward.

For the councillor-at-large positions, Rob Fischer led the way with 2,060, or 47 per cent of the vote, followed by incumbent Deputy Mayor Nigel van Dyk with 38.1 per cent of the vote. Rita Groen was unsuccessful with 652 votes, or 14.9 per cent.

In total, 2,417 votes were cast, representing approximately half of the 4,838 eligible electors, with 20 electors declining.
