LISTOWEL – The holiday season always seems to bring out the charitable spirit in people, and it was definitely the case when it came to the second annual Listowel Ford Blanket Drive conducted last month.
The initiative supported the Children’s Health Foundation at the Children’s Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The charitable drive, initially conceived by Ford sales consultant Matt Cory, collects new blankets, sheets and quilts for use by hospitalized children and their families in London. Blankets are in high demand in the NICU, with quarantine protocols demanding that they be utilized for single use only.
The 2019 edition of the Blanket Drive accumulated 298 donated items, nearly doubling the total blankets brought in by the inaugural 2018 initiative.
“The community was at the utmost supportive; local businesses downtown put up our flyers, it was the talk of the town,” said Cory. “People were asking how they could help in future years.”
Cory, with the help of Ford administration staff, delivered the nearly 300 blankets to the Children’s Health Foundation on Dec. 23, with Cory adding that, “It was definitely a wow factor when bringing them in.”
The Ford Blanket Drive is to continue as an annual event, with plans for a third running during the 2020 holiday season.
“This will forever change the course for Listowel Ford – this annual event is creating a holiday destination and we love being a part of it,” said Cory. “We hope that we keep the momentum going and can potentially have a surplus to start researching and finding other needing organizations for blankets, wherever we can spread the warmth and joy.”
