Busy weekend at the Walkerton Legion

The lounge was a-buzzing on the weekend with a full slate of activities. Bright and early on a great sunny fall Saturday morning, 48 golfers teed off at the Doug Hewitson Memorial Golf Tournament. Thanks to the organizers, Sports Officer Ron Lamont and volunteer Pete McGowan, the teams got off without delay. Closest to the pin was a won by Al Schnurr. Joe King hit the longest drive for the men, while the bragging rights for ladies’ longest drive went to Tammy Thomas. Congratulations to the winning foursome which consisted of Ron Kroeplin, Clint Pettepiece, Doug Petteplace and Al Schnurr. Everyone met back at the lounge for an excellent lunch prepared by our volunteer kitchen crew. A big shout-out to the donors for our prize table, since many of our usual donors have been hit hard by the pandemic. Keep supporting local, because healthy businesses contribute in so many ways to a stronger community.

Our regular meat draw started at 3 p.m. that same day, under the leadership of our “Vanna,” Dennis Taylor. Our thanks to the entire team who give up their Saturday afternoons to work at the draw every second weekend. I hear everyone was having a really good time and that it was one of the loudest, funniest draws in a long time! Set aside Oct. 2 for the next meat draw – maybe you’ll be another triple winner!

Sunday, several tables of people were at the lounge to witness the Catch the Ace draw. Although you don’t have to be there to claim your prize, if your name was Carmen Rahn, you would have been pretty pleased to watch the Optimists draw your ticket! Envelope No. 6 revealed the Jack of Clubs, so Carmen won this week’s prize of $898. Enquiring minds want to know if there’s something special about Formosa, because recently there was another Formosa winner. Get your tickets before they are sold out. The more tickets purchased, the bigger the weekly pot and the faster the jackpot grows, predicted this week to be around $18,000.
