BROCKTON – Brockton council discussed several recreation amenities at their June 16 council meeting, deciding on the status of three items.
After considering the guidelines and recommendations from the Ontario government and the Grey Bruce Health Unit, council decided to cancel the Brockton Summer Day Camp Program for 2020.
“This was a very difficult decision for everyone involved. The Municipality’s priority is ensuring the health and safety of our campers and staff,” stated the municipality in a press release on Wednesday.
Brockton staff are exploring alternative summer programming to support Brockton families. Any additional measures needed to safely deliver a quality program for children will be announced in the coming weeks.
“The Municipality sympathizes and understands the impact of this cancellation on our families who rely on childcare during the summer,” further stated the release. “Due to the risk, liability, and responsibility involved with screening, health and safety protocols, program operation details, financial implications, and safely operating the camp it was determined that Brockton could not operate the Summer Day Camp for 2020.”
The news was not all bad, however, as the municipality will be moving forward with reopening the Walkerton Kinsmen Club Splash Pad and the Lobies Park Campground on June 26.
The splash pad will be open from 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., seven days a week.
As required by provincial guidelines, the splash pad will be fenced in and only 10 people will be allowed in the splash pad at any given time. During busy or peak times, access will be limited to 30 minutes per person.
Access to the splash pad will also be on a “first come, first serve” basis to allow residents equal time to use the splash pad. If a child leaves/exits the splash pad, they will be required to re-join the line and wait until another child leaves before re-entering.
Lobies Park Campground will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week. Reservations will be accepted beginning June 19.
To allow for proper physical distancing, certain campsites will not be accessible.
The single-use washrooms will be open and staff will clean and disinfect the washrooms twice a day. The communal washroom will not be opened.
