Trevor and Jill Reading prepare to open 30,000-square foot multi-use facility
LISTOWEL – It’s been over a year and a half in making it a reality, and Trevor and Jill Reading are now are on the cusp of opening their sparkling new multi-use recreational facility in the North Perth Industrial Park.
The longtime Listowel residents have tentative plans to open the doors to Between the Lines Sports Campus at the end of July. Located on Rocher Road in Listowel’s south end, the new approximately 30,000-square foot business features a number of training amenities and full-sized playing surfaces to host several sports mediums.
A 72-foot by 126-foot (approximately 10,000-square feet) indoor soccer pitch is the centerpiece of Between the Lines, complete with netting enclosure and prepared to accommodate players for practice, training and league play. The facility also houses four batting cages, an 800-square foot synthetic ice surface, four badminton/pickleball courts that are convertible into a volleyball venue, and a two-lane walking track.
“We started talking about it at Christmas time the year before, then we broke ground in June and it just kind of drove on,” said Trevor Reading, a previous owner of the PlayBall Academy in Kitchener. “We had different ideas when we were starting, and we came to this. We just kept adding.”
Between the Lines will also house the new location of Listowel’s Our Town CrossFit branch – operated by Matt and Amy Fischer – in the upper-level mezzanine. The upstairs balcony overlooking the soccer pitch will have stadium seating for 12, and named in memoriam of the seven killed in the Listowel Memorial Arena collapse of 1959.
Rounding out the building is a yoga venue, change rooms/washrooms, showers and a conference/birthday party room for group rentals.
“I think it’s been really positive,” commented Between the Lines general manager Rachel Suffern of the buzz around the area regarding the new facility. “The community has been great and really welcoming. There’s been a lot of word around town about what’s going on. We’re excited to be here; we’re all local or from the area and now returning. We’re excited to be part of the business community.”
“It’s probably the best place for us,” added Reading of the location in the North Perth Industrial Park. “You have all the residential right there. It’s very easy access and there’s lots of room. The nice thing for people coming out of town is that it’s right on the edge of town here.”
Reading specified that the two-lane walking track would cost $2 per use, with one-quarter of the money brought in from that end allocated towards a select local charity every month. He said that the appeal of the track, on-field usage and racquet sport courts will be of particular interest to seniors in the area.
“We’re really trying to open up the daytime hours for them,” said Reading.
Set hours, along with single-use, package and league play details can be found at betweenthelines.ca, with updates forthcoming as the restrictions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic have kept timelines unclear. The Readings are also planning on hosting a formal grand opening at a later date to be determined.
“We want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable here,” explained Suffern. “We said from the beginning that if people aren’t having fun, then we don’t want to do it. We want everyone to have a good time and feel good in the space.”
Reading said of his future clientele, “We want them to come in the door and say, ‘wow’.”
