It is with sadness that the family of David Michael Slosser announces his passing on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at the age of 86.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Alice, of 63 years, and three of his children: Andy (Daniela Vukobratic), Jayne (Gregory McLean) and Christopher (Tanja Kraft). Proud grandfather of Abigael, Coady, Lucas, Dylan, Emily, Sophie, Dashiel and Owen. Brother of Sally (late Richard Campeau), Nancy (Joe Boll), Mary Jane, and Connie (Dave Hudder), brother-in-law to his Kraemer family, and uncle to many nieces and nephews. Dave is predeceased by his parents, Leander and Isabelle Slosser, of Wingham, and by his daughter, Pamela (2002).
Dave will be remembered by many in Bruce County as a teacher, principal and trustee in the Catholic school system. One of Dave’s proudest professional accomplishments, and a story he told often, was how his introduction of the semester system to Sacred Heart High School in the early 1970s, kept the doors of the school from closing when the population had dwindled to only 80 students. Dave watched enrolment steadily increase in subsequent years with the implementation of Cooperative Education and as a direct result of these measures, Sacred Heart High School in Walkerton is thriving today. Dave’s success as an administrator led him to be appointed at a newly established Saint Mary’s High School in Owen Sound as he was entrusted by the board as a strong leader in Catholic Education. Dave also had an affinity for the special education students who he taught while principal of a few elementary schools in the system. Dave was a pioneer in local Catholic Education being one of the first trustees elected in 1968 for the newly formed Bruce Grey RCSS Board. He also served as Trustee to the board after his retirement in 1996.
Aside from his professional career, Dave had two other pursuits that were near and dear to his heart: his farm and his music. The Slosser family farm grew sweet corn, and the greenhouses produced thousands of vegetable and bedding plants for decades. Dave loved to educate his customers on all of the delicious corn varieties, tomato varieties and purple wave petunias.
Dave was a self-taught musician and played piano by ear, banjo, guitar, and could play a mean walking bass. Since his teenage years, he has played in various bands: in the 70’s & 80’s, Dandelion Wine and Nite Flite would play for weddings and dances; in the 90’s, Jubilation played many church celebrations and school Masses, The Singing Grandpas visited kindergarten classes in local schools; and in more recent years, Memory Lane played at long-term care homes across Bruce-Grey.
Friends and relatives were invited to memorial visitation from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at Cameron’s in Walkerton.
