TORONTO – The Wingham/Lucknow Girls’ U18 hockey team are provincial champions after capturing the gold medal at the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association “C” championship, held in Toronto April 7-10.
This determined group of young women – made up of players from Wingham, Lucknow, Listowel and Goderich – brought home the gold medal after defeating teams from across the province.
The team dropped its first game at provincials, losing 2-1 to Lambeth, before rebounding with a 2-1 win over Mount Forest and a 6-1 win over Brockville. They went on to play Chatham in the semifinal and beat them to earn a spot in the gold medal game against Lambeth.
Lambeth came out strong, scoring in the first minute of the game. The local girls tied up the game and then three more goals were scored in the first period leaving it 3-2 for Wingham/Lucknow until the third period. Wingham/Lucknow scored two more goals with less than six minutes left in the game and finished it off with an empty net goal, making the final score 6-3 to win gold.
This capped off a successful season where they were silver medallists at the Brampton Cougars Festival in February, and winners of the WOAA “C” championship in March.
