What’s happening in Formosa

FORMOSA – It is pretty quiet in Formosa.

Formosians are waiting for some consistent cold winter weather so that ice can be made on the new outdoor pad at the recreation complex. The recreation committee was pretty excited about having a new covered rink where they would not have to clear the snow off the pad every day, but first Mother Nature must co-operate by keeping the temperature below zero degrees.

From appearances it may be quiet, but behind the scenes things are still happening in Formosa.

The Formosa Swans held elections at their last meeting with the following Swans taking the executive positions: President – Marlene Voisin, Vice-President – Jodie Rogers, Secretary – Linda Benninger, Treasurer – Ann Kennie, Feather Plucker – Tracey Jansen, and Past President – Mary Nichols.

If Mother Nature cooperates, the Swans are planning to host a Community Family Skating Party. Keep an eye out for the date. And they are planning the annual Easter Egg Hunt at the community centre on Saturday, April 8.

The organizers of Formosa Country Christmas are very pleased with the numbers of patrons who visited the drive-thru event in December. They estimate that over 10,000 people attended, with 34 per cent of attendees coming from outside Grey and Bruce counties. Nine per cent were from outside of the province, travelling from British Columbia, Alberta, and Yellowknife. There was also an international contingent of patrons from Mexico, North Carolina, France and Japan. Comments ranged from “WOW!”  to “Imagine the little hamlet of Formosa having that big Christmas show?”

The FCC committee are already holding meetings for the fifth event coming in 2023, and dreaming up more fantastic Christmas Light displays. The committee was most grateful to the sponsors and to the whole community of Formosa who decorated their homes for the event.

Because of the snow storm on Jan. 25, the Formosa Lions held a Zoom executive meeting. Plans were discussed for upgrading the recreation complex washrooms. The Lions Library had a revamping and the Formosa school is bringing the students down on a regular basis. There has been no Youth Exchange Program since COVID, but there will be this summer. Members discussed how the Formosa Club may be involved.

Plans were also discussed for the upcoming Mother’s Day and Father’s Day breakfasts.
