WALKERTON – A pair of classes at Walkerton District Community School teamed up to host a food drive for the local food bank.
Students from Ms. McBride’s and Mrs. King’s Kindergarten class joined forces with students in Mrs. Gaasenbeek’s Grade 4/5 class to collect non-perishable food items for the Walkerton and District Food Bank. Aiming high, their goal was to collect enough donations to stretch around the interior perimeter of the WDCS building.
Students from both classes learned about the need for organizations such as the food bank, and how they help serve local communities. Students in Mrs. Gaasbenbeek’s class learned the statistics of food bank use and created an informational bulletin board. Ms. McBride’s and Mrs. King’s Kindergarten students learned about the social and community aspects of food bank programs as part of their learning about our local environment and their role in that environment.
Over the two weeks from Nov. 21 to Dec. 2, school-wide donations were collected and on Friday, Dec. 2 the two classes worked together to lay out all of the donated items. With opportunities to drop off items during parent/teacher interviews or while visiting the book fair, the students were excited to find that they almost reached their goal, with the results covering most of the perimeter.
The families of WDCS donated 1,960 items that were then sent to help those in need in our very own community.
