Walkerton Legion supports student battlefield trip

WALKERTON – Thanks in part to a $5,000 donation from the Walkerton Legion, students from Sacred Heart High School will once again be venturing to the United Kingdom, France, Belgium and the Netherlands to bear witness to the incredible struggles that provided us with our peace and security.

The students will be touring battlefields of World War One and World War Two. Each student will be responsible for adopting one local veteran, researching the individual’s life and service and then locating their veteran’s grave site. Students will share their research and place a token of remembrance at each grave.

For the past several years, Walkerton Legion Branch 102 has assisted with the cost of the battlefield tours.

“We are proud of the dedication and promotion of remembrance that SHHS and its students display, and this donation will allow the purchase of coats for the students to wear,” said Rose Austen, president of Branch 102.

In recognition of the ongoing support of Branch 102, Sharon Turcotte, whose husband Mario Turcotte is a teacher at SHHS, created a tapestry of battle scenes which was recently presented to the Legion.
