The Doug Hewitson Memorial Golf Tournament will take place on Sept. 18 at the Walkerton Golf and Curling Club. The tournament is open to everyone whether or not you are a member of the Walkerton Legion. This event is a four-person, best ball scramble with lunch and prizes to follow at the Legion. Sports Officer Ron Lamont confirms that spots are limited and the sign-up sheet is posted in the lounge. You can also book your team’s spot by calling the Legion at 519-881-0821.
Our sympathy goes to the family and friends of member Brad Wilken. Our flag was down due to his sudden death on Aug. 15.
A few weeks back, I told you about Rich Henry’s Ride to Cure Childhood Cancer. He’s looking to accomplish another goal before Aug. 31 – the Navy Bike Ride for the Royal Canadian Naval Benevolent Fund and Support Our Troops. To help these worthy causes, find ‘Richard Henry’ on the Navy Bike Ride Race Roster or call Rich at 519-881-0582.
Aug. 31 is also the deadline to order a veteran banner. Don’t miss out on your opportunity to have a banner hanging in downtown Walkerton during this remembrance period. Veterans do not need to be deceased or Legion members; they just need to be from within the Municipality of Brockton. More than one veteran can be on the same banner, plus a home version is available.
Veterans and Seniors Officer Pete McGowan has received word that the Durham Legion is extending an invitation to all veterans to attend their monthly Veterans Coffee Break. Pete will be contacting our 35 veterans shortly to arrange transportation.
The jackpot sat well over $12,000 when Sharon Dales won $596 in Week 20 of Catch the Ace draw. Her pre-selected envelope No. 10 held the 2 of Diamonds. Buy your $5 ticket at the Legion, Cargill Variety, Holst Office Supplies (Walkerton), Kaufman’s Your Independent Grocer, Walkerton Foodland or Brown’s Guardian Pharmacy. Tickets are also available through members of Kinsmen Club of Walkerton and Walkerton and District Optimist Club.
No winners yet for the Legion’s daily and weekly member-only draws, because Liz C. and Doran MacD. were both “not signed in.”
