WALKERTON – Connecting a solution to a need is what the Walkerton Kinsmen do best.
The need was the 95-year-old steps at Victoria Jubilee Hall, which are sorely in need of replacement.
The building, saved from the wrecker’s ball more than two decades ago and run by volunteers ever since, has had innumerable improvements over the years.
The concrete porch and stairway, however, is too big a job for our dedicated volunteers.
Patched many times, the steps need to be replaced, and if the new ones last 95 years, our children shouldn’t have to worry about them.
The job is estimated to cost $40,000, and the Kinsmen have stepped up with a $10,000 donation.
This is not the first time the Kinsmen have helped out at Victoria Jubilee Hall. Back in 2000, when close to a million dollars was raised for major upgrades, the Kinsmen were front and centre. This time, the vote was unanimous.
“An important landmark like this has to be supported,” said Kevin Mackey, Kinsmen president.
Representing the Walkerton Kinsmen at a recent cheque presentation were Mackey, secretary John Vance, Jeff Goulding and Glenn Lang. Accepting the donation for the Victoria Jubilee Hall were Henry Simpson, Robin Zettel, Bob McCulloch, Joanne Sutton, Jim Bohnert, Ruth Fischer, Marg Sockett and Ted Cobean.
Between various grants and this pivotal donation, we are getting close to the finish line.
