U15 Mustangs place second at WOAA year-end tournament

HOWICK TOWNSHIP – The Upper Maitland Mustangs hosted the WOAA year-end tournament at the Howick Community Centre on April 1-3. With over 15 teams in attendance representing the U11 and the U15 divisions, the Howick Community Centre was the spot to be this past weekend.

On Friday night, the Upper Maitland Mustangs U15 team went up against the Walkerton Capitals in their first game of round-robin play. The Mustangs, eager for the win, fought hard and left their fans on the edge of their seats waiting for the first goal. The game ended in a 0-0 tie.

On Saturday afternoon, the Mustangs took on the Saugeen Shores Storm. The girls battled hard and the game was scoreless at the end of the second period. With two minutes left in the third period, the Mustangs got two goals to guarantee them the win. The final score was 2-0.

On Saturday night, the Mustangs entered game three against the Grey Highlands Shooting Stars.

Their spirits were high and they knew this would be a tough match. By the end of the second period, the score was tied at 1-1. The game-winning goal was scored in the third period to grant the Mustangs the win and advancement to the championship game on Sunday afternoon against the Owen Sound Ice Hawks.

Owen Sound came on strong, scoring in the first period. The Mustangs played with determination but were not able to defeat the Ice Hawks, with a final score of 3-0.

The Mustangs finished second in their division and should be extremely proud of their accomplishment. It was an exciting weekend of hockey and the team’s dedication and passion for the game and teamwork definitely didn’t go unnoticed.
