PERTH COUNTY – A break and enter and two vehicle thefts resulted in a Huron East resident facing 15 charges, after a series of events in Perth County last month.
On Nov. 19 just after 12:30 a.m., the Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a break and enter that had occurred at a residence on St. George Street in Mitchell. Suspect(s) had entered the residence and stole tools, medications, collectables, electronics, and bank cards. The suspect(s) had also stolen the homeowner’s vehicle from the driveway.
The vehicle was later recovered by police at an address in Huron County, but the other stolen property was not located. Through the investigation, police were able to identify suspects.
Subsequently on Nov. 23, police were called to a suspicious person and vehicle on Barber Avenue North in Listowel. Police located a wanted person, who was in possession of another vehicle that was stolen from the Hamilton area. That same vehicle had failed to stop for police a few hours earlier in Howick Township, and was seen fleeing towards North Perth.
Joseph Cluett, 26, of Huron East, has been arrested and charged with: Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 (three counts), possession of a credit card, operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code (two counts), failure to comply with release order (two counts), fail to comply with probation order (six counts), and take motor vehicle without consent.
The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
