Truck crashes into downtown Atwood building

Cause of incident still unknown as Main Street closed for extended period Monday

ATWOOD – Residents planning on sleeping in the holiday Monday received an early wake-up call of a different sort in Atwood the morning of Sept. 5.

Perth County OPP are yet to clarify as of press time the cause or any potential charges being laid after a tractor-trailer crashed through the side of a downtown Atwood building around 6:30 a.m. that morning. The building, located at the corner of Main Street and Blair Street, has been owned by local resident Sanel Hadziavdic for 10 years, who was currently in the process of renovating its four apartments and street-front commercial space. The building is believed to have been vacant at the time of the crash.

“Somebody woke me up this morning, actually one of my tenants from the next building,” said Hadziavdic at the scene, approximately three hours after the incident took place. “Around 7 o’clock… he said there was something wrong and that something had happened. I didn’t expect this.”

A sedan parked on the east side of Main Street was also extensively damaged by the truck, which remained lodged within the building as of the morning of Sept. 6. Highway 23/Main Street between Monument Road and Line 72 was closed while clean-up measures took place. North Perth Fire Department crews and the OPP closed off the affected stretch of Atwood’s Main Street until approximately 4 p.m. on Monday.

The OPP did report minor injuries as a result of the incident.
