The news is out

If you want to know what has been going on behind the scenes at the Walkerton Legion over the past few months, pick up a copy of the Walkerton Legion Newsletter. Members will have received a copy by email or by mail, depending on their preference.

The successful annual inspection demonstrates the executive has obviously been doing a good job of running the branch. The executive approved over $30,000 in donations last year, including $2,300 from Nevada tickets and $3,100 from the Lottery Trust Fund. These last two amounts are a direct result of your support of our meat draws, purchases of Nevada break-open tickets, as well as proceeds from our member-only draws. The next meat draw will be this Saturday, Oct. 16, starting at 3 p.m.

More good news – the branch has been approved for a New Horizons for Seniors grant to provide wheelchair-accessible doors to the hall and to renovate the women’s washroom in the hall so it will be wheelchair accessible as well.

With 239 members on the roster, this is a reminder that the 2022 early bird membership renewal campaign is underway. Terry Neil was the September winner of a free membership for the following year. The rest of us who renewed during September are still in the pot for the October and November draws. Everyone saves $5 during the early bird campaign and veterans always get a $5 discount. If you can’t make it to the branch to renew, you can mail a cheque to Branch 102, PO Box 29 in Walkerton and we’ll send you the 2022 sticker with your receipt. Although you can renew online through the Dominion Command membership portal, they won’t deduct the early bird or veteran discounts. Please help us out by keeping your contact information (including your email) up-to-date. You can drop off changes at the branch, email to walkertonlegion@wightman.ca, or make the changes through the membership portal.

The Catch the Ace is still going, but very soon it will be gone! On Thanksgiving Sunday, Kurtis Inglis was thankful for the largest weekly win so far – $1,062, when the Queen of Clubs was found, hiding inside envelope No. 27. Maybe this Sunday you could be the winner of an even bigger weekly amount, or perhaps the jackpot, which is estimated to be around $23,000. No vendors have tickets this week, but there still may be some available at the Legion.
