PAISLEY – On Saturday, Aug. 18 at 9 a.m., 39 veterans buried in the Starkvale Cemetery will be honoured during a special ceremony from No Stone Left Alone (NSLA).
NSLA is a Canadian charity which encourages our young people to remember the sacrifices of veterans who returned home and contributed to our communities. Starkvale Cemetery is located at 4532 County Rd. 1 (turn west at Paisley). Youngsters and veteran’s families are encouraged to join the volunteers and members from Walkerton Legion and Paisley Legion to place a poppy rock on the veteran graves at the conclusion of the ceremony.
These beautiful works of art were created during recent painting parties at the Legion in Paisley (pictured above). Volunteers have also assembled brief stories about each veteran, containing information about their families and their military service.
So far, 600 poppy rocks have been placed on the graves of veterans buried in eight local cemeteries. Family members are crucial to ensuring all veterans are identified. Originally, researchers had identified 32 veterans in Starkvale Cemetery, but have since learned of seven more and still counting. If you know a veteran who is buried locally, please leave a message for Jan Briggs-McGowan at the Walkerton Legion (519-881-0821) or Sharon Hope at the Paisley Legion (519-353-5444).
