South Bruce mayoral candidate: Rita Groen

BIOGRAPHY

I have lived in Teeswater since 1997 with my husband Gerald, and we have three grown children. We have a successful dairy operation that we run with our son. I am semi-retired from the farm and ready to take on a larger role in our community. I have an active life-style and love the outdoors. South Bruce is a haven of rolling hills, full of beautiful nature, rich farmland and world-famous sunsets. Reading and learning is also my passion. Along with my college degree, I have taken many courses to improve my knowledge and abilities. If I don’t know an answer, I research until I am satisfied that I have that knowledge. I enjoy meeting people and working as a team. I have been involved with Vacation Bible School, was the president of the Catholic Women’s League, and was on the executive of Huron-Perth Women for Agriculture. I have been involved with exchange programs from various parts of the world and have hosted international students. I’ve worked with soup kitchens, support those less fortunate and donate time and money to various charities. As your mayor, I will bring my straightforward nature, work-ethic and experience and inclusive decisions to the council table.

ISSUE

I believe that the most important issue facing South Bruce in this election is to create trust again in our municipality. Trust takes a long time to earn, but as residents have seen, can be quickly lost. Building trust begins with truly listening to residents. We must return to a time when people in our community looked out for each other. The municipality must use clear wording that everyone can understand and not the ambiguous wording being used within the reports and information used in the Nuclear Waste Management Organization’s (NWMO) tactics. The municipality has had too much focus on creating consent for the deep geological repository (DGR). Many of the important issues in our municipality are not being addressed in a timely manner; improving infrastructure, solving the sewage problem in Formosa, and staying on top of the current and pending municipal issues. I support a DGR referendum, a simple YES or NO, for South Bruce, as soon as possible so that the direction of our municipality is clear and defined. Once a definitive answer is procured, everyone in the municipality can move forward, knowing the direction we are headed. Trust, integrity, open communication and listening are what our municipality needs so our divisive community can begin to heal and unite together in the needs and wants of South Bruce. I will bring a “fresh start” to the Municipality of South Bruce. I will listen to the residents and act upon what I hear. My straightforward nature, work ethic, experience in business, inclusive decision making and my community involvement will serve the residents of South Bruce well on council. The Municipality of South Bruce is my home and I will work hard to make it the best place to live.
