South Bruce council candidate – Teeswater-Culross Ward: Mike McDonagh

BIOGRAPHY

My wife’s name is Kim and our two daughters as well as their spouses and three grandchildren live in Teeswater as well.

I was self employed for 43 years; my wife and I ran a hair salon along with several other entrepreneurial opportunities. We retired in September 2021, and now spend our time with our family, and by giving back to the community.

I am seeking to return to council because I enjoy the opportunity and privilege of shaping the future of the municipality I call home. I feel there is still work to be done in areas such as daycare, property standards and bylaws. Roads and bridges need to be  maintained and replaced, and there are several recreation opportunities that need to be explored. Additionally, the asset management plan will be a large undertaking in the years ahead. I have been a part of the Teeswater Medical Centre building project since its inception and would like to see it completed. I have good knowledge on the DGR project, and want to use my position and knowledge to make certain it is a safe and a viable option for the municipality if it comes here.

BIGGEST ISSUE

The biggest challenge facing the municipality is our fiscal well-being. Should the DGR project not come to South Bruce, the new council will need to be very creative and thoughtful to maintain and improve the current infrastructure and assets as well as the level of service as a small municipality. We will have to look at new ways to maintain and grow our economy, for the benefit of our taxpayers. Should the DGR come to South Bruce the new council will have a monumental talk of ensuring the municipality is justly compensated, and that a fair, well rounded and detailed hosting agreement is reached. Regardless of whether or not the project takes place, I am committed to working hard to ensure we have a strong, forward-thinking vision for the well-being of all our community members.

Yes. It has been determined by this council which I am a member of that a referendum is the preferred choice. I support a referendum occurring in our community once studies are complete and a draft hosting agreement has been prepared.

If I am re-elected, the attributes I will bring to council will remain commitment, honesty, fairness and integrity.
