Snell lone new face on Morris-Turnberry council

Heffer acclaimed mayor; Freiburger, McCallum and Zinn all re-elected

MORRIS-TURNBERRY – Jodi Snell will be the lone new face on Morris-Turnberry council for the upcoming term.

Snell, in her first election, was successful in winning a seat on council by finishing fourth – by one vote – out of six candidates. Snell received 587 votes (16.8 per cent), while Christopher Michie received 586 votes (16.7 per cent).

Incumbents Kevin Freiburger, Jamie McCallum and Sharen Zinn will all return to council, finishing in the top three of voting. Freiburger led the way with 720 votes (20.6 per cent), McCallum in second with 689 votes (19.7 per cent) and Zinn in third with 590 votes (16.9 per cent).

Dale McFarlan finished sixth of the six candidates with 328 votes.

Incumbent Mayor Jamie Heffer will once again sit in the mayor’s seat, having been acclaimed in August after no challengers stepped forward.

Recount?

As of Tuesday morning, returning officer Kim Johnston said no recount had been requested by any of the candidates.

A recount is required when there is a tie vote where both or all candidates cannot be declared automatically.

There are other instances where a recount can be requested, but do not apply to this situation.

Johnston, in an email to the Advance Times, said, “Morris-Turnberry does not meet all the requirements to hold a recount” at this time.

Voter turnout

Voter turnout was down slightly in 2022 compared to 2018.

Early reporting shows 35.1 per cent, or 1,039 of 2,959 eligible voters, cast a ballot in this year’s election.

In 2018, the voter turnout was 37.56, or 1,088 of 2,897 eligible voters.
