Sistema Walkerton students play year-end concert for parents and family

WALKERTON — Sistema Walkerton hosted a year-end concert on the stage of Victoria Jubilee Hall on June 16.

Students played several songs to an audience of family and friends. The program included “Mary had a Little Lamb,” “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and “Beethoven’s Ode to Joy.”

“It’s fair to say the students were very excited to perform and showcase everything they’ve learned this year—they played their hearts out,” said executive director Robin Zettel. “Thank you to all of the friends and family who came out for the show to make this extra special.”

This was the inaugural year for Sistema Walkerton, shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Students have been practicing after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays since April.

Sistema Walkerton is free after-school program that aims to reduce barriers to violin lessons and performance opportunities for local students. Similar Sistema programs exist in countries right around the world.

Sistema Walkerton is a registered non-profit run entirely by volunteers and funded through grants, sponsorships and donations. Its board of directors is made up of music professionals and educators.

The program looks to build on a successful first year this coming September. Watch the program’s Facebook page @Sistemawalk for updates and registration dates.
