WALKERTON – Trillium Mutual Insurance recently announced a $2,000 donation to Sistema Walkerton though its ROOTS Community Fund.
“Sistema Walkerton reduces barriers to professional music lessons,” said Robin Zettel, executive director of Sistema Walkerton. “We know the important role music plays in the well-being and growth of our school-aged children. Funding the arts is an important part of growing and building a vibrant community. Thank you to the ROOTS Community Fund for this generous contribution and for helping reduce barriers to professional violin lessons.”
Sistema Walkerton is a non-profit run entirely by volunteers out of the Walkerton District Community School. Now in its second year, they have 10 students participating from different rural areas. The classes run every Tuesday and Friday and are offered free to each student that participates. The funding provided will go towards purchasing new booklets that the students are given at the start of the program.
Each booklet provides basic introductory information to musical notation and some songs that they will tackle throughout. Along with the booklet, each student also receives a violin for the duration of the program so that they can easily practice.
“Trillium Mutual understands the value of having access to after school and community-based programming. This donation will help Sistema Walkerton continue providing much needed access to youth programming in the arts,” said Tracy MacDonald, president and CEO of Trillium Mutual.
