Sistema Walkerton duets with Canadian music charity

WALKERTON – Sistema Walkerton has received a significant donation to support efforts to reduce barriers for local students looking for professional violin lessons.

The free after-school program has received $8,000 from MusiCounts, one of Canada’s most recognized music charities. This year, the MusiCounts TD Community Music Program awarded $320,000 to 24 not-for-profit organizations across the country to help deliver music programming at the community level.

“We’re over the moon,” said Sistema Walkerton Executive Director Robin Zettel. “This investment will support local students and is an excellent example of the importance of investing in rural arts programs. A big thanks to MusiCounts for this significant contribution.”

The funding will go toward purchasing sheet music, accessories, instruments and maintenance.

Sistema Walkerton kicked off its second year this October with 12 students and runs every Tuesday and Friday at the Walkerton District Community School. Students join the program from schools in Mildmay, Formosa, Walkerton and the home-schooling community. Aside from lessons twice a week, the program also offers a light snack. Community violins are on loan for the duration of the program.

Sistema music programs exist in countries right around the world offering free lessons to students of all ages.
