PERTH COUNTY – In July 2021, Perth County council gave direction to the Public Works Department to install ‘School Zone Maximum Speed When Flashing’ signage at all school zones adjacent to county roads that have a posted speed limit of 80km/h.
The installation of new signage on these roads reduces road speed to 60km/h when school is in session and the amber flashing beacons are active.
The new signage can be found on the following schools and roads:
Perth South Centennial – Perth Road 163 (Perth South)
Downie Central School – Perth Line 20 (Perth South)
North Easthope Public School – Perth Line 43 (Perth East)
Central Perth Elementary School – Perth Road 135 (Perth East)
Mornington Central School – Perth Road 131 (Perth East)
Mennonite School – Perth Road 121 (Perth East)
Mennonite School – Perth Line 86 (Perth East)
These new signs will be flashing from approximately 8:15-9:15 a.m. and 2:45-3:45 p.m. County staff has worked with each school to determine the most suitable times for these beacons to be programmed. The Highway Traffic Act gives council the authority to designate these zones and these timeframes are particularly important as there are increased turning movements of vehicles entering and exiting school grounds during these daily peak times.
“We are pleased to have the support of county council in the creation of these new school safety zones.” said John McClelland, director of public works. “These are important steps to control traffic speeds on County roads and help protect the student population.”
Solar-powered lights have been installed at and are now operational at each of the seven locations.
