Public Health declares COVID-19 outbreak at Listowel DSS

Cases deemed as probable, not yet confirmed by results

LISTOWEL – As a precautionary measure, Huron-Perth Public Health (HPPH) declared a COVID-19 outbreak at Listowel District Secondary School on Sept. 22.

Responding to an email inquiry from the Banner following an update on HPPH’s website on Monday, Acting Communications Coordinator Katherine Horst said that the cases involved were still deemed as “probable” pending laboratory-confirmed results. HPPH declares school outbreaks when there are two or more cases of COVID-19 in students, staff or other visitors within a 14-day period, where at least one case could have reasonably contracted the coronavirus within the school.

“HPPH’s investigation is ongoing and we’re working with (Avon Maitland District School Board) and school administrators to manage the outbreak and prevent further virus transmission within the school,” wrote Horst.

Pertaining to regional COVID case numbers, Huron-Perth reported 37 active cases on Sept. 27. The most concentrated area of those cases in HPPH’s coverage is in Perth East, where there are 13 active instances; North Perth reports five.

The Knollcrest Lodge long-term care home outbreak in Milverton was declared over last week. Four are currently hospitalized in the region with COVID-19.
