Promar Karate from Listowel did extremely well at the Virtual World Karate Championships this year. With COVID-19 knocking out live tournaments, much of the martial arts world turned to virtual karate over the past couple years. The Virtual World Karate Championships had competitors from Canada, U.S., South America, Europe, and Asia. There were four tournaments throughout the year. The competitors with the most points in their division became the champion. Shihan Mark Yates of Promar Karate Listowel took first in 18-plus Traditional Weapons. This was one of the larger divisions on the circuit and Yates went undefeated during the season to take first place. He also took firsts in 55 years and older Korean forms and Open forms. Additionally, Freya Yates, Shihan’s granddaughter, 5, took the novice kids’ Open Weapons division and the kids’ novice Traditional Forms division. (Submitted photo)
