Perth County offers condolences on passing of former warden

Elsie Karges was Perth’s first female warden, first woman to sit on Listowel town council

PERTH COUNTY – Perth County expressed its condolences on the recent passing of former warden and county council member, Elsie Karges.

Karges was the first woman to sit on Listowel council from 1972-1988, and she was elected as the first female warden of Perth County in 1982. Karges was a long-time resident of North Perth and was an active community volunteer and conservationist.

“On behalf of county council and staff, I wish to offer my sincere condolences to her family and friends,” commented Perth County Warden Rhonda Ehgoetz. “In honour of her life and public service to our county, and when weather allows, the courthouse flag will be lowered until the day of the funeral on Jan. 20, 2023.”

Karges (nee Harding) was born on Jan. 4, 1930 in Howick Township. Later in life she moved to Listowel where she married Oliver Karges in 1949, raising three sons.
