PERTH COUNTY – At 1:45 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19, Perth County officially declared a ‘significant weather event’ as per Ontario Regulation 239/02. This declaration applied to all county roads and did not apply to local township roads or provincial highways.
According to the provincial regulation, the definition of a significant weather event indicates there is “an approaching or occurring weather hazard with the potential to pose a significant danger to users of the highways within a municipality.” Earlier on Feb. 19, Perth County Ontario Provincial Police closed all county and township roads due to substantially deteriorating weather conditions.
“Declaring a significant weather event allows us to continue our road maintenance operations in a safe and responsible manner during hazardous weather,” said John McClelland, Perth County director of public works, on Saturday. “We have seen substantially deteriorating conditions across our road network due to snowfall and high winds and we want to ensure our plow operators are able to continue their work safely.”
The event was officially declared over as of 8:15 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 21.
