Perth County declares a significant weather event for Feb. 12 to 13

PERTH COUNTY – At 8:30am local time, Perth County officially declared a Significant Weather Event as per Ontario Regulation 239/02. This declaration applies to all county roads and does not apply to local township roads or provincial highways.

According to the provincial regulation, the definition of a Significant Weather Event indicates there is “an approaching or occurring weather hazard with the potential to pose a significant danger to users of the highways within a municipality.”

“We are aware of a large weather system that will move through the Perth County region beginning this afternoon (Wednesday) through to Thursday. This weather system is anticipated to bring heavy accumulation in a short period of time with gusty winds,” said John McClelland, executive director of public works.

“Declaring a Significant Weather Event allows the county to continue road maintenance operations in a safe and responsible manner during severe and hazardous weather. County plows will continue to operate, but the difficult weather conditions can mean road maintenance may take longer than usual. County plows will operate until it is no longer safe to do so.”

All non-essential travel throughout the region is strongly discouraged. If citizens must travel, leave plenty of additional time and give snow plows extra space and distance to operate.

Notice of this declaration will be circulated by Perth County to the media via a news release and communicated to the public via the County’s website and social media. When the declaration has concluded, an update will be communicated via these same channels.
