STRATFORD – Perth County council has awarded the contract for the courthouse elevator project.
On Feb. 17, Elgin Contracting and Restoration Ltd. was awarded the contract for the project. The $1,085,000 project aims to improve the accessibility of the Perth County Courthouse through the addition of an elevator to the facility.
“The addition of a modern elevator is an important step in the history of this facility,” said Perth County Warden Jim Aitcheson. “Council has taken steps to ensure the accessibility and longevity of the building allowing for improved access for the public and staff who enter the facility regularly.”
John McClelland, Perth County’s director of public works, says staff will work with the contractor to minimize any disruption of services during the project.
“This is an exciting phase in the history of Perth County and of this facility,” said Perth County CAO Lori Wolfe. “Through this project, council has shown a continued commitment to the good stewardship of county facilities and resources.”
The Perth County Courthouse originally opened on May 9, 1887, and is renowned for being one of the most magnificent courthouses in Ontario with many of the original building features still intact. Measures have been taken over the years to show good stewardship of this historic facility, including the replacement of the spire in 2009 and the replacement of the slate roof in 2014.
The Perth County Courthouse is home to both county administration staff as well as the Superior Court. A date for the ground-breaking and construction schedule has yet to be finalized.
