Optimist Club hosts spelling bee for local Grade 5 students

WALKERTON – On Thursday, March 23, the Walkerton and District Optimist Club hosted its annual spelling bee. The spelling bee was held at KINHALL, above Timber Mart in Walkerton. After three years of not being able to host this event due to the pandemic, students were excited to participate.

Seventeen Grade 5 students from area schools participated in the spelling bee, including students from ICS in Formosa, St. Teresa of Calcutta School in Walkerton, Sacred Heart in Mildmay, Mary Immaculate School in Chepstow, and Walkerton District Community School.

All students who participated in the spelling bee did a great job and showed excellent spelling skills. The top three winners were awarded $25 cash and all students went home with some sweet treats and a participation certificate.

The top three spellers were:

– First place: Liam Kieffer from ICS;

– Second place: Auryn Deschamps from Walkerton District Community School; and

– Third place: Jessica Farrell from Walkerton District Community School.

These students were invited to attend the district competition in Heidelberg, Ontario, which took place on Saturday, April 15.

Once again, all participants did an excellent job and the Optimist Club was happy to host such a worthwhile event.
