William Anthony Mullen passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Thursday, July 3, 2025, in his 80th year. Bill was born and raised in Walkerton and later lived with his wife and children in Cargill, Hanover, Watford, and then Sarnia since 1990.
Bill was predeceased by his loving wife of 58 years, Caroline Rita Berberich Mullen (2019). He leaves behind three children, Angie and Jill (Scott) of Sarnia, and Dave (Jodie) of Strathroy, as well as six grandchildren, Aaron, Spencer, Payton, Julia, Ava and Bria, one great grandchild Amelia, plus his four-legged companion of 17 years, Oscar. Bill will be missed by his sisters, Jean (Peter) Richardson, Dora (Dave) Johnston, his brothers, Albert (Brenda) Mullen, David (Judy) Mullen, as well as sisters-in-law Audrey Mullen, Phyllis Siegner, Margaret Weber, Rose (Ron) Wilhelm and brother-in-law Jerome Berberich, and many nieces and nephews.
Bill was predeceased by his parents, Wilbert and Kathleen Mullen (Siegfried), siblings Robert and Jim Mullen, Gertrude Wilhelm and Maxine Poechman, as well as four brothers-in-law including Gerald Wilhelm, Bill Poechman, Paul Weber, Bill Siegner, and one sister-in-law, Marlene (Bester) Berberich and Carol’s parents, Rita and Alphonse Berberich.
Most of Bill’s working life revolved around his interest in home building construction. He and Carol owned and operated Cargill Lumber Limited during the 1970’s. In 1988 Bill and Carol moved the family to Lambton County where he had accepted a position as Manager of the Watford branch of Moffatt and Powell Building Supplies. In 1990 Bill then opened a custom kitchen cabinet showroom in Sarnia. In 1992, Bill entered the Home Inspection industry, which would become his true-life passion. Until his retirement 27 years later, Bill built a very successful multi-inspector company, Bluewater Home and Property Consultants. During those years, Bill became very involved in the Political side of the Home Inspection industry and he was highly respected by his colleagues in the industry. He served on many committees and boards, including the National Board for the Canadian Association of Home and Property Inspectors. He served a few years as President of CAHPI and received many awards for his extensive work and accomplishments.
Bill’s family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Robert Borek for the exceptional care he has provided for over 30 years and also to the Home Care Support workers who have helped during the past 10 years. Additionally, thank you to Dr. Kim, Dr. Al and the staff on the Palliative Care Unit at Bluewater Health for the kind, compassionate care provided during Bill’s final months.
Family and friends are invited to drop in to a Celebration of Life for Bill at the Walkerton Knights of Columbus Community Hall on Sunday, July 27th from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. There will be an opening prayer at 2:15 p.m. and then all are welcome to share their tributes and memories.
