Lloyd Mervyn Karges of Listowel passed away at Listowel Memorial Hospital, with his family at his side, on Monday, February 9, 2026, in his 85th year.
Father of Sara & Darren Hart of St. Albert, AB, and Ian & Kelly Karges of Goderich, and grandfather of Logan and Griffin. Brother of Paul & Cathy Karges of Listowel, and loved and remembered also by his nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Mervyn & Vietta (Mason) Karges, and by his sister Marie Torreiter and her husband Ted.
Lloyd was born in July 1941 and grew up on the family farm outside of Gowanstown. After attending a one-room schoolhouse, he went on to university, including a course at Harvard, and spent 2 years teaching in Tanzania through CUSO. He later taught high school math in Toronto before returning home to purchase the family farm and become a dairy farmer until his retirement.
Lloyd volunteered generously, including with Habitat for Humanity and helped build a school in Nicaragua. He loved his garden, birds, music, and lively conversation over coffee. A member of the church choir and the Schneider Male Chorus, Lloyd was deeply committed to learning, the environment, and making the world a better place. He will be dearly missed.
Visitation will be held at the Eaton Funeral Home, Listowel, on Friday, February 13 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Celebration of Lloyd’s life will be held at Trinity United Church, Listowel on Saturday, February 14, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Jennifer Hoover officiating. Spring interment in Fairview Cemetery, Listowel.
